May 8th’s Morning Show with Tammi Molad-Hayo focused on Human Rights issues of the week throughout Israel. The show consisted of an intriguing discussion between Tammi and Dr. Keinan about the minimum requirements to live a dignified existence, and shed light on how Israel’s poor are well below this required level. Another segment included Mr. Pinchuk, a member of the Association Of Civil Rights; they spoke about a new bill which would grant soldiers the power to charge those whom bash the army with libel or any other related offense. Probably the most troubling discussion of the day consisted of a discourse between Tammi and Rawuva Abu-Ravia of the Association for Civil Rights regarding Israel’s quest to deal with the “Bedouin Problem”. This is, of course, the Governments attempt to move Bedouin populations out of their home territory in the Negev. Interestingly enough, as the Negev consists of 60% of Israel’s total land, the Bedouin only occupy – and are asking for – 5% of that. This land grab by the Government is considered by many, including Abu-Ravia, to be “unjust, unequal, and [ultimately] unattainable.

Today on Tammi Molad-Hayo’s Morning Show, we covered a long list of topics including several proposed pieces of legislation put forward in the Knesset this week; one on the allowance of referendums for land swapping laws (something which can be interpreted as detrimental to the peace process), one proposing a larger percentage of seats in the Knesset to be officially recognized as a sitting party, and the last proposal being the question of raising the number of supporters to 61 in order to put forward a vote of non-confidence – with this particular piece moving forward to the next stage of deliberation. Staying in the realm of politics, Tammi interviewd Yaii Sharki, a reporter for Gelatz; the conversation swirled around the Shas Party leadership changing hands, with the installment of Aryeh Deree after Rabbi Ovadia Yosef made it so.

Tammi also interviewed Hannah Barag, whom shared with us two stories: one of a tour group of Palestinians travelling from East Jerusalem to Eilat, only to be told once they arrived that they were not permitted to enter the city. They were promptly escorted back to east Jerusalem by the authorities. Barag also spoke of an injustice to one young Palestinian who was detained because he did “not having the right working permit documentation” according to a judge whom had never actually seen a working permit before. He was held in a prison, as opposed to being allowed to return home.

In our “Voices from the South” segment, Tammi and Yehuda Allush shared with us news from the South. including: the southern football team’s avoiding of a drop to the second league with a win this week and their fans whom are unhappy with the lack of local talent in the club, the management at a phosphorous plant in Arad who has been pushing their workers to demonstrate against the city to allow the company to operate an additional mine – putting health at risk – , the drop in drug smuggling across the borders but the increase in home grown chemical drugs, and a labour conflict with the minor staff at Ben Gurion U. who all want a say on which courses are being offered at the campus.

Today on Capital, Journalism, and Government, conversation was informed and heated. Shabbi looked at Lobbyist news around the Globe, and stopped in England and Ireland to discuss how England’s Government, which once promised to push forward lobbyist registration law, has now buried that piece of legislation; while Ireland recently passed their own lobbyist registration draft – the last step before passing into law. Government and Capital were also discussed, as Shabbi brought forward Tamal Zandberg of the Mertz Party’s suspicion of questionable moves made by an investor for ICL, which withdrew money days before their share price fell due to the break-up of the potential deal between the Israeli Corp. and a Canadian Potash Firm, suggesting leaked information. Finally, Shabbi brought to the table the growing support for making the Ministerial Committee of Legislation Affairs transparent, rather than classified. On the air with him was Guy Dayan, a lawyer from “Movement for Freedom of Information”, whom has been working towards this goal for years. He now has a new ally in the Justice system, the new Justice Minister. Tune in next week for more discussion with Shabbi on Capital, Journalism, and Government.

How does the Israeli government justify displacing SO many people, in SO many communities in the South Hebron hills??! How can they justify more military training zones?!! Whats the political link?! What is the end game, and When will it end?!

Today, Eetta brought up the violence in Tel Aviv, bringing up angles that aren’t usually discussed and calling for an end to Holocaust imagery for every racist expression.  Ran Melamed discussed the politicization of the protest movement.  After talking about the anti-normalization campaign among the Palestinians, Eetta interviewed Jerusalemite Kevrok Alemian, chairman of “Chefs for Peace,” a Jewish-Christian-Muslim/Palestinian-Israeli effort to get past the conflict and meet as equals and use their knives to create good food.  Following up on the recent decision to recognize Reform and Conservative community leaders as rabbis and fund their salaries, Eetta talked with 15 y.o. Michal Chin about being a Reform Jew and how this savvy teenager – and thousands like her throughout Israel- express their religious commitment.  And as always, with lots of good music to begin the week.
